I Don’t Qualify for a TWIC or MMC
Some people won’t qualify for credentials due to previous criminal records, drug use or other reasons. Both the TSA and USCG have seperate lists of disqualifying reasons a credential may not be issued. If your refused a credential I recommend that you appeal that decision, give more and better information and try again. There is no extra cost to you and most appeals are won!
Merchant Mariners NOT able to get a credential have only a few choices available to them. You are NOT required to have these credentials if you want to work or are working as a deckhand on the “Western Rivers” on a Towboats, river boats, or barges.
*Note* If you want to work as an Apprentice Stearsman, Mate-pilot or Captain you WILL need these credentials.
Some Towing Companies are now requiring all their new employees to have at least a TWIC. Check with their Human Resources Department for specific requirements.
Also most commercial fishing boats do not require a credential. Each employer will have their own policies, so check with them.
